Sanctuary (2022)

A collaboration between second year NAFA degree students, participating Sisters frim Franciscan Missionaries of Divine Motherhood (FMDM) and Assisi Hospice.

‘Sanctuary’ attempts to re-evaluate the idea of the hospice as a heterotopic space, in which we attempt to situate a semblance of a garden-inspired haven within this temporal space. Meaning ‘other place’, heterotopias deviate the individual from normal constructs of society, by placing them in a parallel space, one that functions through specially curated rules.

In a similar attitude, our work emulates the concept of acceptance - inspired by the conversations with Sister Florence where she referenced her love for nature as a space to seek serenity. ‘Sanctuary’ addresses the apparent stigmas surrounding the hospice and those within it, while attempting to instill the importance of human touch and connection. As an interactive installation, the sculpture glows in response to a human in close proximity - a re-kindling of the spirit; whilst the surrounding atmosphere envelopes the viewer in a comforting experience.

Participating artists: Anthea Chew, Charlene Ramos, Isabelle Lim, Khalisa Khairul and Norica Taslim
