Closet Deconstructed

November 11, 2020

Romantic partnerships among artists were never uncommon to begin with, but when you subtract all the heterosexual couples from the equation, we are left with a significantly small number of the ones that are known today. Despite these couples making their sexuality and romantic partnerships public, face erasure of their sexuality after being put back in the closet. This was the case for Robert Rauschenberg twice after his passing when his sexuality was omitted from his obituary at the Met and the years following that, in an installation called ‘Johns and Rauschenberg’ which highlighted how the creations made during their collaboration period kickstarted their career and success. Homophobia now exists in a new form, no longer denying their same-sex relationship directly, but their usage of symbols to hint at their sexuality by dismissing it as “the most traditional forms of signification.”
